TMJ Massage in Vancouver

For jaw tension, clicking, clenching and the headaches that come with TMJ pain or dysfunction. Treatment by our registered massage therapists in South Granville, Vancouver.

Overview

TMJ massage is registered massage therapy for the muscles around the temporomandibular joint: the jaw, cheeks, temples and neck. It eases the tightness behind clenching, clicking and a jaw that won't open fully, plus the tension headaches that tend to come with it. An RMT does the work. Direct billing is available, and the session sits alongside your dental or medical care, not in place of it.

What is TMJ massage?

The temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, is the hinge that connects your jaw to your skull, just in front of each ear. You use it constantly. Talking, chewing, yawning, and for a lot of people, clenching all night. The muscles that drive that hinge get worked hard, and so do the neck and shoulders holding your head up. When they tighten up, you feel it: jaw pain, a click or a pop when you open, a jaw that won't open all the way, grinding through the night, a dull ache that creeps into the temples and behind the eyes. That cluster is what most people mean by TMJ pain or dysfunction.

TMJ massage works that muscular layer. Your RMT treats the jaw, cheek, temple, neck and shoulder muscles to settle the tension and take some of the pull off the joint. When those muscles calm down, the headaches they refer into the temples usually ease off too. It's hands-on clinical work, so your receipts qualify for extended health coverage.

Can massage help with TMJ pain or dysfunction?

It helps with the muscular side of the problem: the tight, overworked muscles that drive clenching, restricted movement and tension headaches. As that tension settles, a lot of clients tell us the jaw feels looser and the headaches let up. TMJ is one of several conditions we treat, and that overview walks through how massage helps with each. What massage won't do is diagnose or fix a structural or dental problem. So if your jaw locks, the pain is severe, or a dentist is already managing your bite or a night guard, tell your therapist and keep your dentist in the loop. The massage handles the muscles; the dental side handles the joint and the bite. You want both.

What does a TMJ treatment involve?

It starts with a conversation. Your therapist asks where it hurts, when it's worst, and whether you clench or grind, then treats the relevant muscles from the outside: jaw, cheeks, temples, neck and shoulders. Some of the muscles that matter for TMJ can only be reached from inside the mouth. With your consent, treatment can include gentle intraoral work for those, and you can decline that part, or any part, at any point. A 45- or 60-minute session usually gives enough time to treat the area properly and send you home with a few self-care pointers. Intraoral work sits inside the RMT scope of practice in BC — our guide to choosing an RMT in Vancouver explains how that regulation works and how to verify any therapist's registration.

TMJ massage — frequently asked questions

Massage therapy can help with the muscular side of TMJ pain or dysfunction — the tight jaw, cheek, temple and neck muscles that contribute to clenching, limited opening and tension headaches. It is not a substitute for a dental or medical diagnosis; if your jaw locks, you have severe pain, or a dentist is managing your bite, let your therapist know and keep your care team in the loop.

Yes, in most cases. Because the session is delivered by a Registered Massage Therapist, it's eligible for extended health coverage, and we direct-bill more than 20 insurers. You'll usually only pay the portion your plan doesn't cover. See our direct billing page for the insurer list.

Some TMJ treatment includes gentle intraoral work — released only with your consent and within your comfort — alongside work on the jaw, neck and shoulders from the outside. Your therapist will explain what they plan to do first and you can decline any part of it at any time.
