Overview
Relaxation massage (the older name is Swedish massage) uses long, gliding strokes and lighter pressure to settle the nervous system and ease everyday tension. Choose it when you want to de-stress rather than treat a specific injury. It's RMT-led at Cascade, so the receipt qualifies for extended health coverage.
What is relaxation (Swedish) massage?
The strokes are long and gliding, the kneading slow. Nothing about it rushes. Because the therapist isn't digging into a problem, the pressure stays light, and your breathing tends to drop along with your shoulders. People book it when they just want to switch off for an hour.
A run of bad sleep, a stressful month at work, or no reason at all beyond needing the break — any of those is reason enough. And gentler doesn't mean less skilled. Whoever you see at Cascade is a Registered Massage Therapist in good standing with the CCHPBC, so your receipt still works for extended health. Plenty of our relaxation regulars come from Kerrisdale and the quieter streets nearby, where an unhurried hour is exactly the point. If you're weighing up clinics first, our guide to choosing an RMT in Vancouver covers what to check.
How is it different from therapeutic or deep tissue massage?
It comes down to intent. Relaxation work keeps the pressure light and the whole body the focus. Therapeutic and deep tissue go the other way: firmer, slower, aimed at one stubborn knot or an injury you want sorted. Not sure which you need? Book the relaxation session and tell your therapist where you're holding tension — they can keep most of the hour calming and spend a few minutes on that one tight spot.
Relaxation massage — frequently asked questions
Yes. Because our relaxation massage is performed by a Registered Massage Therapist, it qualifies for extended health coverage and we direct-bill more than 20 insurers — the same as our other services. You'll usually only pay your portion.
Many clients find relaxation massage helps them wind down and rest better, especially during stretches of high stress. It's not a medical treatment for sleep disorders, but the calming effect on a tense body and busy mind is exactly what it's designed for.
For a proper unwind, 60 or 90 minutes gives you time to fully settle. A 30- or 45-minute session works if you're short on time. Current rates are on our Rates & FAQs page.
